In a tragic development, 21-year-old Ayabonga Mjilo, who had been missing since Christmas Day, has been discovered murdered and buried in a shallow grave in eNanda, KwaZulu-Natal. Mjilo was reported missing on December 23, 2024, after being last seen leaving a restaurant in Umhlanga with a male companion.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, confirmed the grim discovery and the arrest of a 37-year-old man in connection with the young woman’s death. The man, identified as Mjilo’s work manager, allegedly abducted and killed her.

According to Netshiunda, Mjilo was seen leaving the restaurant with the man in the early hours of December 25. When she failed to return home, her family filed a missing person report, prompting a police investigation.

Through diligent work, detectives identified the man seen with Mjilo and tracked him to his home in the Amaotana area of Inanda. It was revealed that the two had an argument at the suspect’s residence, during which he allegedly strangled Mjilo and buried her body in his yard.

The suspect was arrested on the morning of January 4, 2025. He will face charges of kidnapping, murder, and defeating the ends of justice when he appears in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

This heart-wrenching case has left the community in shock, as police continue their efforts to bring justice to Mjilo and her grieving family.
