A brutal attack by suspected bandits in Baure village, located in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State, has left 21 people dead and several others missing. The attack occurred on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, when a joint team of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (CWC) and vigilante members, returning from what was initially reported as a condolence visit, were ambushed and fatally shot.
According to a statement by the Katsina State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, the incident unfolded around 4:30 PM. Despite a quick response from police officers stationed at the Safana Divisional Headquarters, the attack resulted in a high death toll. DSP Sadiq confirmed that 21 people were killed, and efforts are underway to apprehend those responsible for the killings.
However, conflicting reports have emerged from local residents. A Baure villager, speaking to Punch in a telephone interview, refuted the claim that the security personnel were on a condolence visit. Instead, the source claimed that the joint security team had been in the area to confront bandits who control Baure and surrounding regions. The villager explained that the bandits were aware of the security team's movements and had reinforced their numbers, leading to the deadly confrontation.
The resident also shared troubling details of another attack in Wurma, just seven kilometers from Baure. On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, four people, including two members of the CWC and two women, were killed. In addition, homes and shops were set ablaze in the attack, further escalating the already tense security situation in the region.
The police are continuing their investigations into the attacks, and local authorities are coordinating efforts to bring peace to the troubled area.
