Justin Welby officially concluded his tenure as Archbishop of Canterbury with a symbolic act at Lambeth Palace on his final day in office. In a private ceremony, he laid down his bishop’s crozier on the altar in the chapel, signifying the end of his ministry.

This traditional gesture, performed by bishops upon leaving office, precedes his official departure at midnight, when he will legally cease to hold the position.

Archbishop Welby spent the day in quiet reflection at Lambeth Palace, attending Morning Prayer, a lunchtime Eucharist, and Evensong, culminating in a service of Compline.

As part of his farewell, the Archbishop met with staff, friends, and former colleagues to express gratitude for their contributions during his tenure.

Welby’s time as Archbishop has been marked by significant moments in the Anglican Church, and his departure signals the end of an era for the global religious community.
