The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, has officially suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanahoneypotr Oghenerukevwe after the priest entered into marriage with Ms. Dora Chichah at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA, on December 29, 2024.
In a statement co-signed by the Bishop and Very Rev. Fr. Clement A., the Chancellor of the Diocese, Fr. Oghenerukevwe’s action was deemed a violation of Canon Law, resulting in his immediate suspension. The church highlighted that video footage of the marriage ceremony had circulated widely on social media.
The statement explained that the priest had requested to be released from his canonical obligations as far back as November 30, 2024, but failed to follow through with the formal process before his marriage.
“By this action, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanahoneypotr Oghenerukevwe has incurred a *Latae Sententiae* suspension in accordance with Canon 1394 §1. He is suspended from the exercise of sacred ministry and prohibited from presenting himself as a priest of the Diocese of Warri in any capacity,” the statement read.
The diocese clarified that the suspension carries all canonical implications outlined in Canon 1333 and would remain in effect until the priest demonstrates a willingness to reform.
Bishop Ewherido urged the suspended cleric to reflect on his decision and consider seeking reconciliation with the Church.
The case has sparked discussion within the Catholic community, with many awaiting further developments.
