In a move on Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” effectively banning transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports in the US.
This decision aims to “put an end to the war on women’s sports” in the country, according to Trump.
The order tasks the US Department of Education with ensuring schools nationwide comply with the directive.
Trump warned that institutions allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports risk losing federal funding, stating, “If you let men take over women’s sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated for violations of Title IX and risk your federal funding.”
This move is the latest in a series of actions by the Trump administration that have been criticized by LGBT rights activists.
The participation of transgender women in female sports has been a contentious issue, with various organizations implementing their own rules and regulations. World Athletics, the International Swimming Federation, and the World Boxing Council have all prohibited transgender women from competing in female events under certain circumstances.
In contrast, the International Olympic Committee has taken a more lenient approach, allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s events under specific conditions.
The impact of Trump’s executive order on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles remains to be seen.
