Armed assailants suspected to be bandits launched a deadly attack on Pandogari, a community in Rafi Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, killing a vigilante and kidnapping six teenage girls.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday night, saw the attackers arrive in large numbers through the Birnin Gwari axis. They reportedly moved past Mamman Kontagora Technical College before abducting the victims, aged between 15 and 17, and fleeing to Kwangel Forest—an area notorious for criminal activities.
Confirming the incident, Rafi LGA Chairman, Ayuba Usman Katako, lamented that the community has endured repeated assaults in recent weeks.
“This is the third attack in the last two weeks. Previously, they focused on kidnappings, but this time, a vigilante was killed before they took eight people. Thankfully, four later escaped,” Katako revealed during a Hausa radio program on Prestige FM.
Adding to the concern, Zubairu Isma’ila Zannan Kwangoma, the lawmaker representing Rafi Constituency in the Niger State House of Assembly, raised an urgent motion highlighting the deteriorating security situation.
“In just one month, 122 people have been kidnapped, and two killed in Rafi LGA,” he stated, identifying Pandogari, Gidigori, Ringa, and Kawo as the hardest-hit communities. He warned that the incessant attacks have led to severe economic distress, disrupted farming activities, and forced many residents to flee their homes.
Kwangoma called for immediate collaboration between the Niger and Kaduna state governments to strengthen security efforts and curb the escalating crisis threatening the region’s stability.
