Popular Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, has resurfaced from hiding, pleading with the Ogun State Government to release his detained associates while expressing distress over the ongoing legal battle. His emotional appeal has raised concerns about his well-being, as he hinted at suicidal thoughts due to the pressure of the situation.
Portable reportedly went into hiding after he and his team allegedly assaulted officers of the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority (OGPDPA), who had visited his Odogwu Bar and Restaurant to enforce a closure order over permit violations and inadequate airspace.
In his version of events, the singer accused the officials of unlawfully storming his property, arresting over 20 individuals, including customers and artists, and seizing personal belongings, gadgets, and vehicles.
However, the Ogun State Commissioner for Physical Planning dismissed Portable’s claims as “spurious and blatant falsehood.” Following the incident, nine of Portable’s associates were arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, on charges including felony, assault, obstruction, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The accused—Nurudeen Warris (21), Adetola Alashe (25), Samuel Adeleke (28), Oluwaseun Ayenuwa (19), Oluwapelumi Adeosun (20), Gospel Kanu (20), Precious Ohiegebo (19), Ifeoluwa Babatunde (27), and Fatimo Muhammed (26)—pleaded not guilty and were granted bail of ₦5 million each, with sureties licensed as bond agents registered with the state government. The case was adjourned to March 17 for further hearing.
On Saturday, Portable broke his silence via Instagram, making an emotional appeal to the Ogun State Government, insisting that his detained associates were merely apprentices learning trades. He denied the allegations of assault and challenged the authorities to provide video evidence of any wrongdoing.
"They lied against us. My glory will kill my enemies," he said in a mix of Yoruba and Pidgin English. "The house they sealed was built on land where I exhumed my mother’s corpse. She died when I was 13. I later built a mansion there. They should provide proof that I assaulted anyone. Those boys cannot harm anyone; they are just trying to learn a trade.”
Portable also expressed despair over the ordeal, stating that he was being targeted by certain individuals. "I am already in deep thought. I must not commit suicide. I did nothing wrong. You cannot kill me," he pleaded.
His latest outburst has sparked widespread reactions, with many urging authorities to handle the matter with caution while others call for a thorough investigation into the allegations.
“I didn’t fight anybody. They’re just trying to set me up. I am from a poor family yet i’ve helped a lot of people. Artistes, bricklayers, tailors and many other people live with me” - Portablepic.twitter.com/dwb3flkJHT
