The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit drugs, substandard processed foods, and unsafe cosmetics valued at ₦4.7 billion in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The large-scale destruction, conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service, marked the first-ever joint zonal exercise targeting harmful products across South-South states.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Christiana Adeyeye, represented by South-South Zonal Director Chukwuma Olugbo, disclosed that the agency uncovered warehouses in Port Harcourt stocked with expired alcoholic beverages that had been revalidated and illegally reintroduced into the market.
She further revealed that an intelligence-led operation in July 2024 led to the seizure of counterfeit medical supplies, unregistered cosmetics, and imported vegetable oil lacking Vitamin A fortification from multiple locations, including Delta State.
According to NAFDAC, the crackdown is part of its ongoing effort to safeguard public health and rid the market of dangerous and substandard products.
