A suspected cultist, Kelly Osayawe, has been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for allegedly shooting a man during a burial procession in Benin City.
According to the police, Osayawe, a 25-year-old member of the notorious Vikings cult group, opened fire on Nzube Cletus Mbum while the victim was standing in front of his shop on Old Road, Aduwawa, on February 7, 2025.
The suspect, armed with a locally-made cut-to-size pistol loaded with four live cartridges, fired shots into the air before targeting Mbum, hitting him with pellets that caused injuries to his hand, leg, and back.
The police were quickly alerted, and Osayawe attempted to flee the scene. However, with the help of members of the public, he was chased down and apprehended.
In a statement released by the Command's Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, the police confirmed the suspect's arrest and ongoing investigations.
Yamu revealed that Osayawe had been invited by a fellow cult member, identified as Nice, to attend the burial of Nice's mother, where the violent incident occurred.
"The suspect was immediately arrested after an attempt to escape, thanks to the swift response from the community," Yamu said. "He is currently in custody, and investigations are underway."
The incident has raised concerns about the rising influence of cult groups in the state and the use of violence during public events.
