Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized the importance of tough decision-making in leadership, citing an instance where he sacked his own daughter from his farm for lateness.
Obasanjo recalled the incident on Sunday while hosting Dr. Dayo Israel, the new Chairman of the Board of Management of Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba in Abeokuta.
He advised Israel to be prepared to make tough decisions and “step on toes” to achieve success.
The former President shared a personal anecdote, saying, “Shortly after I left office as Head of State, my first daughter, then at University of Ibadan, studying Veterinary Medicine, was engaged on my farm to gain some practical experience during long vacation.”
However, after warning her for lateness on the first day, Obasanjo was forced to take action when she repeated the offense the following day.
He stated, “To my amazement, the following day, she was late to work again. I did not hesitate to send her back right from the gate.”
This decision had a profound impact on his employees, with Obasanjo noting, “Not surprisingly, this had an indescribable effect on all my employees, saying ‘if Baba could do this to his daughter, who are we?'”
Obasanjo’s leadership philosophy emphasizes effectiveness over popularity, as evident in his statement, “If you’re doing a job and you’re not stepping on toes, then you’re not effective.”
He also advised Israel to be “just, fair, and humane” in his decision-making.
