The Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) has arrested 18 suspected criminals linked to kidnapping and armed robbery across the state.
According to a statement issued by the corps commandant, retired Commissioner of Police Friday Ibadin, the suspects were apprehended during a security operation along the Benin-Auchi Road. The arrest led to the recovery of 38 locally-made firearms, pellets, and various charms.
Ibadin explained that the operation took place near Equedion Camp, close to a military checkpoint, where security personnel spotted two individuals armed with guns. The suspects attempted to escape but were pursued, leading to the discovery of their hideout and the arrest of 18 individuals.
Further investigations revealed that 17 of the arrested suspects were from outside Edo State, while one was identified as an indigene from the Agbede community in Etsako West Local Government Area.
The suspects have since been handed over to the Agbede Police Station for further investigation and prosecution.
Ibadin emphasized the need for greater collaboration between security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements. He assured residents that security operatives would continue bush-combing operations to ensure that forests and farmlands remain safe.
The arrests come just days after Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, directed security agencies to intensify efforts in flushing out criminals from the state’s forests, ensuring safety for farmers and residents.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security operations across the state, vowing to sustain efforts to make Edo safer for all.
