Tragedy struck in Ondo State as a health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, was shot dead by unknown gunmen near Akure Airport in Eleyowo, Akure North Local Government Area.

According to family sources, the 46-year-old was returning home on Tuesday evening around 8 p.m. when he was attacked.

A relative, who spoke anonymously, suggested that the assailants might have intended to kidnap Oyabiyi. "They ambushed him from the bush and shot him in the belly while he was in his car," she recounted. "He died shortly after the attack."

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami, assured that authorities were investigating the matter. "We are on top of the situation and will provide updates soon," she said.

The victim's body has been deposited at a hospital morgue.

This incident follows a series of violent attacks in the area, including the recent abduction of a farm manager and two industrial training students in Oke Oge, Oba Ile community. In another attack, five farm workers were shot dead by gunmen.

The kidnappers of the farm manager have reportedly contacted his family, demanding a ₦15 million ransom.
