The Department of Home Affairs has detained Anabela Rungo, the mother of Nigerian model Chidimma Adetshina, over allegations of immigration fraud.
Rungo was taken into custody in Cape Town following the revocation of her South African documentation, which authorities say was fraudulently obtained. The documents were officially nullified in September 2024. Despite this, she allegedly remained in the country, using a Mozambican passport to avoid detection.
The operation, spearheaded by the Counter-Corruption and Immigration Services branches, also uncovered that Adetshina’s underage child was living with Rungo at the time of her arrest. Authorities are now working with the Department of Social Development and the SAPS Child Protection Unit to ensure the child’s welfare.
Officials have confirmed that Rungo will be handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), as she is also under investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
This development has reignited public interest in Adetshina’s family background. The model, who won the *Miss Universe Nigeria* title last year, had initially entered the *Miss South Africa* pageant before later withdrawing. The situation has cast a spotlight on allegations of identity fraud and the improper acquisition of South African citizenship by her mother.
Authorities have yet to disclose further details on Rungo’s legal proceedings, while public scrutiny surrounding the case continues to grow.
