The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a trans-border drug trafficking syndicate, arresting four suspects and seizing a large cache of tramadol pills worth millions of naira.
According to a statement released on Sunday by NDLEA’s Director of Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the operation targeted drug smugglers who concealed tramadol in hidden compartments within vehicles heading to border towns.
The breakthrough came on January 27, 2025, when NDLEA operatives intercepted a Sienna bus with registration number ABJ 452 HG along the Nasarawa-honeypot Road in Keffi, Nasarawa State, following weeks of surveillance. The vehicle, which was traveling from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Yola, Adamawa State, was found to contain a hidden stash of tramadol.
Two suspects, 27-year-old Zahradeen Adamu and 44-year-old Abubakar Usman, were apprehended at the scene. Another vehicle, a second Sienna driven by 48-year-old Abba Usman, was also stopped and searched, revealing tramadol pills cleverly concealed in steel compartments beneath the bumpers.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Kingsley Mbaeri, identified as the main supplier of the illicit drugs. He was taken into custody on January 29 at his residence on Uga Street, Onitsha, Anambra State. During the raid, NDLEA operatives recovered two vehicles—a Toyota Corolla (FGG 948 MF) and a Toyota Sienna (GWA 23 HH)—believed to be linked to the drug operation.
The NDLEA has vowed to intensify efforts in curbing drug trafficking and bringing perpetrators to justice.
