The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its crackdown on illicit pharmaceuticals, sealing over 3,000 shops in the Idumota Open Drug Market, Lagos, within a week of enforcement operations.
In a statement released on Saturday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, NAFDAC revealed that the operation uncovered disturbing violations, including vaccines stored in poorly ventilated, iron-sheet-sealed rooms, creating severe health hazards.
Authorities also discovered large quantities of banned and hazardous drugs, such as Analgin injections, diverted HIV antiretroviral medications, and expired drugs earmarked for illegal revalidation.
"We have evacuated illicit pharmaceuticals equivalent to 12 truckloads," the statement read. "Additionally, empty packs and cartons of expired, unregistered antimalarial injections were found inside a packaging shop, where the vials had been removed for reprocessing."
NAFDAC further disclosed that ecstasy (MDMA), various brands of codeine cough syrup, and Tramadol 225 were recovered from a hidden warehouse within the market, separate from the main pharmaceutical section.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to sanitizing Nigeria’s drug distribution system and curbing the proliferation of counterfeit and dangerous medicines, stressing that enforcement operations would continue nationwide.
