The Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan Archdiocese, Most Reverend Gabriel ‘Leke Abegunrin, has disclosed that his niece was recently kidnapped in the Oke Ogun area of Oyo State and was only released after a ransom running into millions of naira was paid.

Speaking at a press conference following the plenary session of the Ibadan Provincial Catholic Bishops Conference at the Jubilee Conference Centre, Oke Ado, Ibadan, the Archbishop condemned the growing insecurity in the region. He urged the Oyo State government to increase security measures to curb the rising cases of abductions and killings.

Abegunrin revealed that his niece was abducted while traveling from Ibadan and spent five days in captivity before her release was secured. He also recounted another disturbing case from his hometown, Iwere-Ile in Iwajowa Local Government Area, where a man was kidnapped and killed, and his brother, who went to retrieve his body, was also murdered.

Expressing his deep concern, he said, *“People are living in fear. Some parents are considering pulling their children out of school for safety. The government must intervene urgently.”*

The Archbishop lamented that even security forces sent to protect the people had become victims of violent attacks, stressing the need for stronger collaboration among South-West governors to establish a more formidable security network.

The Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province, which includes Ibadan, Ilorin, Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti, and Osogbo Dioceses, issued a communiqué signed by Archbishop Abegunrin and the Secretary, Most Reverend John Akin Oyejola. They denounced the resurgence of herdsmen attacks, kidnappings, and other violent crimes in the region, urging the government to improve intelligence gathering, equip security forces adequately, and ensure justice is served without bias.

They called for urgent action, warning that insecurity must not be allowed to take root in Yorubaland.
