A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja has issued a directive preventing the Inspector General of Police from rearresting cryptocurrency entrepreneur Obol Jesam Michael after authorities failed to justify his continued detention.
Michael, who was arrested in connection with cryptocurrency-related matters, has been in police custody despite seeking legal action for the enforcement of his fundamental rights.
In Suit No. FCT/HC/CV/14/2024 and Motion No. FCT/HC/8W/M/139/2025, Justice M.A. Madugu ordered his immediate release on February 18, 2025, while also barring multiple law enforcement agencies, including the police, from detaining him without a court directive.
However, despite the court order being officially served on the Inspector General of Police and other involved officers, sources confirm that the authorities have refused to comply.
Instead of releasing him, reports indicate that police attempted to transfer Michael to the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), seemingly in a bid to delay his release. However, EFCC officials reportedly declined to take over the case, urging the police to respect the court’s decision.
Further investigations reveal that Michael, who had been detained at a Maitama facility for three weeks, was subsequently moved to another location.
A senior officer from the Force Intelligence Department, speaking on condition of anonymity, denied claims that the police were defying the court order.
The matter is set to return to court on Monday, February 24, 2025, for further hearings.
