Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has refuted claims that his predecessor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, dictates his administration's decisions. In an interview on Channels Television's "Politics Today," Okpebholo described Oshiomhole as a supportive figure who grants him autonomy in governance. He stated, "Even the man that they say is a dictator is not dictating anything; I am seeing a different Oshiomhole. Oshiomhole is giving me a free hand."
Okpebholo emphasized that while Oshiomhole offers valuable advice when consulted, he does not interfere with the state's affairs. He recounted instances where Oshiomhole encouraged him to make decisions independently, yet provided guidance upon request. "Whenever I want to talk to him, he will say, 'My son, I know how you feel; just do it your way.' But I will say, 'Sir, I won’t do it in my way, please advise me,' and he advises me, and most of the advice comes out to be something positive," Okpebholo noted.
Addressing allegations of being influenced by political godfathers, Okpebholo dismissed such claims, asserting that his rise to governorship was divinely orchestrated with support from various individuals. He questioned, "Can you even point out one godfather who was pushing me?" and added, "God was using people to help me, to support me, to get to where I am today."
Oshiomhole, who served as Edo State Governor from 2008 to 2016 and is currently the senator representing Edo North, played a significant role in supporting Okpebholo's campaign. Despite this, Okpebholo maintains that Oshiomhole does not interfere in his administration, allowing him to govern with a free hand.
In a gesture reflecting their alliance, Okpebholo appointed Oshiomhole's son, Cyril, as the state's Commissioner for Health. This move was perceived by some as a reward for Oshiomhole's support, but Okpebholo clarified that the appointment was based on merit and not undue influence.
Okpebholo and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, were sworn into office on November 12, 2024, succeeding former Governor Godwin Obaseki. The inauguration ceremony in Benin City was attended by prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu.
"I don’t have godfathers but God used people to support me."
