At least two farmers have been killed by some yet to be identified gunmen in Okpekpe community, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
It was gathered that the victims, Philip Batemue and Christopher Bello, were gruesomely murdered on their farms, on Monday, by the criminal elements.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Spokesman for Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu said that security personnel from the Uzanu station, deployed to the scene, discovered the lifeless bodies of the slain farmers.
He said: “Security arrangements in the area have been reviewed, and officers have been ordered to go after the criminals and prevent a recurrence.”
Also speaking over the horrible incident, a traditional ruler, Onwuweko of Okpekpe community, Peter Osigbemeh told PUNCH that policemen were already on the ground to maintain peace and order.
He said: “It is true that herders killed two of our kinsmen when they went to their farms. The police are in the community to find out what happened and fish out the killers.
“I will urge our people to remain calm as the police are set to unravel the matter.”
Also speaking in a statement issued through her Chief Press Secretary, Benjamin Atu, Atoh condemned the killings.
She said: “It is time to tackle this high-level insecurity by deploying the military in parts of the bush and farm areas to give the farmers an immediate sense of safety in their farmlands.
“This is a Black Monday in the Okpekpe community over the killing of the two farmers.
“We urge the governor of the state (Monday Okpebholo) to deploy security across the community and activate local vigilantes, which has consistently been used to secure the council area.”
