At least 12 passengers were burned to death in a fatal crash involving a Toyota Hiace bus and a truck along the Benin-Auchi highway in the early hours of Saturday, March 1.
The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, confirmed the incident, stating that the accident occurred around 5 a.m. near Igueoviobo community, close to an army checkpoint.
According to Mathew, the bus, which departed from Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and was headed for Benin, collided with an oncoming truck traveling toward Auchi.
“The entire occupants of the bus lost their lives in the crash. Preliminary investigations suggest that driver fatigue may have played a role, as the driver may have dozed off before the collision,” he said.
Following the impact, the bus was engulfed in flames, making it impossible to rescue the victims. However, the FRSC was able to identify the deceased through the vehicle’s manifest and has since contacted their families.
Meanwhile, the truck driver and his assistant, popularly known as the “Motor Boy,” escaped unhurt.
In response to the tragedy, Mathew reiterated the need for drivers to avoid fatigue during long journeys, urging them to take breaks when necessary to prevent similar disasters.
