Built to meet the highest level of international standards, the National Assembly complex, Abuja, remains an edifice of architectural admiration. Although the facilities at the main building of the White House are aging seriously, the efforts of Julius Berger, the company handling the maintenance of the edifice, have been helpful.

As ministries, departments and agencies rush to defend their budgets before committees of the legislature last week, the facilities at the White House and the new extension buildings seemed to have been overstretched by the increase in human traffic.

The effect is more pronounced at the White House building where the toilets have witnessed acute water shortage since the last two weeks.

A visitor, who spoke to PUNCH METRO of his ordeal, said he was pressed and had to use toilet at the Senate wing of the complex, but the place was stinking.

He said as he was wondering what was wrong, he saw other visitors, who were disappointed as they discovered that water was not running from the taps at the wash hand basin.

The visitor, who did not want his name to be mentioned, said he thought that it was only that wing of the Senate building that had no water but was shocked when he discovered that toilets at the new wing of the building had also been messed up because there was no water at the complex.

Some Muslims, who used to perform ablution at the Senate wing of the complex because of availability of water there, resorted to buying bottled water. This was evident in the littering of the floor of the toilets with empty water bottles.

When contacted, the Director of Information of the National Assembly, Mr. Monima Daminabo, said he was not aware that there was such a problem in the complex.

According to him, the complex is under the maintenance of Julius Berger, arguing that a problem of such nature could not have occurred under the company’s supervision.

Daminabo said, “I don’t think there is such a serious problem, because Julius Berger is handling the maintenance of the complex. I can assure you that there is enough water in the National Assembly more than anywhere else.

“If there is a problem, it will be a very minor one and that I am sure will be temporary and not a permanent feature.”

He also said he would check with the relevant departments if there was any problem and see how that could be solved immediately.
