The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a suspected dealer of counterfeit high-end alcoholic beverages, Nworie Benjamin, after a five-month manhunt.
Benjamin, 40, was first spotted in September 2024 in Maryland, Lagos, with cartons of empty bottles of premium liquor. However, upon noticing law enforcement officers, he abandoned the exhibits and fled, successfully evading multiple attempts to arrest him.
After months of surveillance, police operatives tracked him down in Ikeja on Monday night. A subsequent search of his shop led to the discovery of a stash of counterfeit high-end spirits and wines, confirming suspicions of illicit activity.
Following his arrest, Benjamin was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, where further investigations are ongoing.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on the production and sale of counterfeit goods, warning individuals involved in such illegal trade to desist or face the full weight of the law.
