Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed allegations made against him by suspended Kogi lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti, suggesting that the claims emerged only after her seat and committee assignment were changed in the Senate.
Speaking on the controversy, Akpabio questioned why Akpoti had not raised the allegations earlier in 2023 if they were true. He further recalled that the suspended senator had previously made similar accusations against other individuals, none of which had been proven.
"It was only yesterday that I realized that these allegations surfaced after the changes in her Senate seat and committee, which are routine adjustments," Akpabio stated. "That was when all hell broke loose, and all sorts of allegations came out."
The Senate President referenced the timeline of the accusations, pointing out that the alleged incident was said to have occurred on December 8, 2023—coincidentally, a day before his birthday, which was publicly celebrated at a stadium.
"From December 8, 2023, neither I nor my wife, nor any Nigerian, including her own husband, heard anything about this until after her committee and seat were changed," Akpabio remarked.
He also urged the public to consider Akpoti’s past accusations against other individuals, emphasizing that none had been substantiated.
"Time will tell. If this matter goes to court, the court will decide," he added.
The controversy has continued to generate heated debates, with political observers closely watching the developments surrounding the suspended senator’s claims.
