Three officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) are currently receiving treatment for gunshot wounds following a violent ambush by armed assailants during an anti-drug operation in the Jahi district of Abuja on Thursday night.
The agency confirmed the incident in a statement released by its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, on Friday.
According to the NDLEA, the operatives had stormed an uncompleted building in the NNPC section of Jahi, acting on intelligence and surveillance indicating illicit drug activities. The raid led to the seizure of 74 bottles of codeine, 10 litres of codeine syrup, 48 grams of tramadol (225mg), 4.9 kilograms of skunk (a potent cannabis strain), and five Android phones.
However, while exiting the location, the team came under sudden gunfire from unidentified gunmen. Three officers sustained serious injuries: one was shot in the rib, while the other two were hit in the back and leg, respectively.
The wounded agents were initially treated at the Police Clinic in Garki Area 1 before being transferred to the National Hospital in Abuja for advanced care.
NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), expressed deep concern over the attack and extended gratitude to the Police Clinic staff for their swift medical response. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to combating drug-related crimes despite growing threats to operatives.
As of the time of this report, the assailants remain unidentified, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Marwa also thanked the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, whom he personally contacted, for overseeing the treatment of the wounded officers.
The NDLEA boss, who is currently in Kano on official engagements, also spoke by phone with the injured officers to wish them a speedy recovery.
He further assured them that the agency would deploy every means at its disposal and work in collaboration with other security agencies to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
