A major traffic scare unfolded on Friday at the Mile 12 Bridge in Lagos when a truck transporting perishable goods suffered a brake failure and rammed into multiple vehicles, leaving at least five people injured.
According to eyewitness accounts, the truck lost control while descending the bridge and crashed into a commercial bus carrying passengers, alongside other vehicles caught in its path. The loud collision caused panic among motorists and commuters in the busy area.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) swiftly arrived at the scene, assisted by passersby who helped evacuate victims and restore some order before a full rescue effort commenced.
“The driver couldn’t stop. The brakes failed completely,” said one eyewitness, who added that the impact threw some passengers off balance inside the commercial bus.
The injured individuals were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported at the time of filing this report.
LASTMA officials towed the damaged vehicles from the scene and worked to ease the resulting traffic gridlock. Authorities have also launched an investigation to determine whether mechanical negligence played a role in the incident.
Officials urged commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators to conduct regular maintenance checks to prevent similar accidents on the state’s busy roadways.
