An air of mystery surrounds the death of an 80-year-old Colombian national, Quesada Vanegas Ricardo Alfonso, who was found lifeless in his hotel room at the upscale Golden Tulip Hotel in Festac Town, Lagos.
The grim discovery was made around 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, when hotel staff entered Room C85 on the 8th floor. Alfonso, who had been a long-term guest for more than four months, was confirmed dead at the scene.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, stating that homicide detectives were immediately deployed after a distress call from the hotel management.
“Preliminary findings show no signs of physical injury or struggle on the deceased,” Hundeyin said, adding that the cause of death remains undetermined pending an autopsy.
The body was conveyed to the Mainland General Hospital morgue in Yaba for preservation and examination. In line with legal protocols, a coroner’s inquest has commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death.
In a related development, several hotel staff were briefly detained for allegedly failing to keep proper guest documentation. They were later released after being interrogated by investigators.
The Lagos State Police Command has pledged to continue with a meticulous investigation, assuring the public that no detail will be overlooked in establishing the truth behind Alfonso’s sudden demise.
