Following the arrest of three refinery chiefs over the alleged mismanagement of a staggering \$2.96 billion meant for the overhaul of Nigeria’s refineries, former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has publicly distanced himself from any financial misconduct.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) last week detained the managing directors of NNPCL’s refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and Warri amid growing concerns over the alleged misappropriation of funds earmarked for long-overdue refinery rehabilitation projects.
With speculation swirling, Kyari broke his silence on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where he firmly denied any wrongdoing and declared his willingness to be held accountable — both before Nigerian authorities and before God.
“I served not only my country but also God. I am happy to account for my stewardship,” Kyari wrote in a reflective post.
Kyari noted that he is currently on a break following the recent dissolution of the NNPCL board and management by the Tinubu administration. He emphasized that after 34 years of service — including 17 years in leadership and nearly six years at the helm as CEO — he scarcely had time for rest.
“I had little time off, not even two weeks of leave,” he said, adding gratitude for the opportunity to serve under former President Muhammadu Buhari and current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a firm declaration of integrity, Kyari stated: “I must emphasize that I served with the fear of God, knowing fully well as a Muslim that if I do not account before man, I will account before Allah.”
His statement comes as public pressure mounts for a full probe into how nearly \$3 billion in public funds was handled under the now-disbanded NNPCL leadership. The EFCC has not yet publicly linked Kyari to any criminal charges, but investigations are ongoing.
