Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has failed to provide any justification for the continued detention of social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
Adeyanju made the statement via his official Facebook page late Monday after visiting VDM in EFCC custody. According to him, despite repeated inquiries, the Commission admitted there was no formal petition against the controversial influencer.
“Got into the country this evening and went straight to VDM at EFCC,” Adeyanju wrote. “Just left him. We still cannot understand why he was arrested. EFCC said there’s no petition against him after our repeated demand.”
Earlier reports had suggested that VDM’s arrest was based on multiple petitions submitted by aggrieved individuals, with BBC Pidgin citing EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale. However, the Commission has since denied those claims, fueling uncertainty around the reasons for his arrest.
The situation has sparked confusion and criticism online, with many Nigerians demanding transparency from the EFCC. As of Tuesday morning, the agency has yet to issue a clear public statement explaining VDM’s detention or confirming whether he will be formally charged.
