The Independent National Electoral Commission Resident Electoral Commissioner in Adamawa State, Mr. Kassim Gaidam on Thursday in Yola said that two men had been convicted for multiple registration in the state.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Gaidam told journalists that the Chief Magistrates’ Court 1, Yola, convicted Salmanu Adamu and Mohammed Sanusi, who were arrested by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps on February 3.

He said that the two men were tried at the Magistrates’ Court for contravening Section 24 (1) a, b, c, of the Electoral Act 2010 and sentenced to two months in prison each.

The REC also said that 9,770 people were found to have registered more than once in the state, adding that the list was being screened to determine its genuineness or otherwise.

He gave the assurance that those who were found to have flouted the law would be charged to court.

“We have come to understand that some of those whose names appeared twice were borne out of mistakes. Like somebody whose finger print was not captured in the first place and he was made to return later.

“We also have a situation where the same person wore different clothes and used different names to register and this is a good case of multiple registration.”
