When next you are driving in the night and a man wearing what looks like a police bullet-proof vest beckons on you to stop, you must look well and ensure that he is indeed a policeman before you fall into the waiting hands of an armed robber.
Reason: A gang of armed robbers in fake police bullet-proof vests are on the prowl in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. These men compliment their fake uniforms with toy guns. In producing the “guns,” they carve woods in the shape of AK 47 rifles and wrap them carefully with black tapes.
They put their creative prowess into use in designing the fake bullet-proof vests. The vests are made from black sacks. Having cut the sack into sizes, they go ahead to use tapes to make an inscription ‘POLICE’ on the sacks.
Armed with their fake vests and “guns,” these hoodlums mount illegal checkpoints at night, where they dispossess unsuspecting people of their valuables.
Already, the Oyo State Police Command has succeeded in arresting a member of the gang, though the others are still at large.
The suspect, Isa Waheed, was arrested along Ibadan-Ijebu Ode Road on March 17, 2011.
At the time of his arrest, a carved wooden gun that resembled an AK 47 rifle, two pieces of torch, a number of tapes and substances suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from him.
Waheed, who claims to be 15, says he is “a motor boy.” He told our correspondent that he was brought to Ibadan from Orita in Ikorodu, Lagos, by a driver identified simply as Lekan.
He said, “Immediately we arrived at Ibadan at about 7 pm, he (Lekan) told me he was going to buy a cigarette. He therefore left his bag with me.
“Shortly after that, policemen came around and asked me what I was carrying in the bag. That was how I was arrested.
“I don’t know Lekan’s whereabouts now. Other friends who work with us like Sodiq and Yusuf are also nowhere to be found.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Baba Bolanta, while parading Waheed before journalists, promised to ensure that the suspect was prosecuted.
Bolanta promised that other suspects currently at large would be arrested and brought to book.
He urged residents of the state to be security-conscious at all times.

So, the youth was just caught with unlawful possesion of a fake firearm and police uniform, eh? He was not actually making use of them at the time of his arrest though, he might later, right? Bt, trust our police, they now put the 'uniform' or him and forced him to hold the 'gun' making the case look like 'impersonation' and illegal mounting of road block or, an attempted robbery case, uh?
