No fewer than seven persons sustained injuries on Wednesday when hoodlums suspected to be political thugs clashed in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
The clash occurred at the Ibadan Motor Parts Dealer Market, Araromi, Agodi Gate, about 250 metres away from the Government House, Agodi.
Our correspondent learnt that trouble started when some members of the Accord Party in the state mounted a podium in the market in preparation for a political rally ahead of Saturday’s rescheduled National Assembly election..
Eyewitnesses alleged that shortly after the podium was mounted, some youths armed with guns, machetes and broken bottles, and other weapons arrived at the scene in a bus belonging to one of the 33 local councils in the state.
The armed youths were said to have started destroying the podium meant for the political rally.
The action reportedly infuriated those who mounted the podium, hence the fracas
In the ensued confrontation, machetes and broken bottles were freely used while the sound of gunshots rented the air.
The incident forced traders and customers in the market to scamper to safety.
Before policemen arrived at the troubled spot, about seven persons were said to have been injured with broken bottles and machetes.
Those who spoke with our correspondent in the market under the condition of anonymity identified one Wasiu Labiran and another one simply identified as Shina as two of those who were injured in the melee.
As at the time our correspondent left the scene, traders were still seen discussing the incident in hush tones with the fear that the assailants could still return.
One Armoured Personnel Carrier and two patrol vehicles belonging to the state police command were stationed at the Agodi Prisons end of the market, apparently to keep the peace.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tunji Ajimuda, confirmed the incident but claimed that only one person reported officially to the command that he was injured in the melee.
Ajimuda, a Superintendent of Police, disclosed that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.
He added that investigation aimed at ascertaining the cause of the crisis and the culprits was ongoing
