FOR about three hours last night, Osun State governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, was the guest of former Oyo State governor and governorship candidate of the Accord Party, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, over the governorship ambition of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

The purpose of the visit, it was learnt was to persuade the former governor to drop his ambition to be governor again and support the candidature of Senator Ajimobi in the bid to eject the incumbent, Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, from the Agodi Government House on May 29.

The former governor who had vowed never to step down for Ajimobi was not around according to a source, when his guest arrived at his 38, Ondo Street, Bodija, Ibadan residence, in company of the secretary to the Osun State Government and other top government officials.

On arrival, Aregbesola, was received by the wife of the former governor, Alhaja Mutiat Olayinka Ladoja, on behalf of her husband, but details of the meeting Aregbesola had with Ladoja’s wife at her apartment, were not made public.

Ladoja was said to be on his way to Ibadan from Oyo town to meet his visitor as of press time.

Efforts to speak with the Osun State governor were not successful, just as Ladoja’s wife also rebuffed the inquisitive reporters, who stayed around throughout the period of the visit.

But the source told the Nigerian Tribune that the meeting Aregbesola was to have with Ladoja centered on the need for the former governor to drop his governorship ambition and join Ajimobi to send Alao-Akala packing .

Mrs Ladoja was said to have expressed reservations about the stepping down of her husband but impressed it on the visitor to await the arrival of her husband from the emergency meeting he went to attend in the ancient town of Oyo to boost his chances at the April 26 poll.

According to the source, Mrs Ladoja told the visiting governor that Ladoja had got to a stage where it would be difficult to inform his supporters of his decision to step down or persuade them to support another candidate, because according to her, they were the ones who asked him from the outset to come out and rescue the state from the alleged misrule ofAlao-Akala since 2007.

The source said efforts to get Mrs Ladoja to make her husband to drop his ambition were abortive.

“You know Mrs Ladoja too knows the game very well and was able to tell Mr Aregbesola why Oga Ladoja may not step down at this crucial hour, considering the support he wields from the good people of the state, who in the first instance, were the ones who prodded him to contest.

“Our party, Accord Party, not minding the fact that it came into reckoning in the state barely four months ago, won four federal House of Representatives seats just two weeks ago out of the 13 seats vied for. We are sure that Ladoja and, indeed, other candidates for the state House of Assembly are candidates to beat next Tuesday, hence the need to go ahead with the race because we have absolute confidence that God is on our side.

“I too learnt that there was communication to Oga Ladoja that these people will be coming and that was why he hurriedly left the Oyo meeting and he is on his way, as I am talking to you. He holds Aregbesola in high esteem and couldn’t have shunned him like some people may want to insinuate later,” said the source who is close to Ladoja’s family who volunteered information on the condition of anonymity.
