Tragedy struck at No. 6, Ajose Street, Mende-Maryland, Lagos, two weeks ago, when a 26-year-old-man, Ndifreke Michael, allegedly murdered his younger sister, Lovina Michael. Ndifreke, who is said to be notorious in his neighbourhood for his unruly ways, is the second of four children. Neighbours told CRIME DIGEST on the condition of anonymity that Ndifreke's lifestyle was akin to that of an Area Boy (urchin). "He would often drink himself to a stupor and sometimes disappear from home for weeks on end. It wasn't unusual to hear him having arguments or fighting with his siblings," the source said. Ndifreke is said to be unemployed, while Lovina sells recharge cards in their neighbourhood for a living. Although the cause of the fight was not known, the parents of the deceased were said to be away when the incident occurred. "It happened during the day, at a time when most adults were away at work. It started with an argument between Ndifreke and Lovina, which later culminated into a fight; this wasn't unusual." Wanting to avoid intruding on private family matters, neighbours didn't try to stop the fight going on in the Michaels' apartment. "The next thing we heard was a loud bang and then silence, but we didn't know Lovina had been murdered," the source continued. Unknown to everyone, Ndifreke had dealt his sister a death blow with a large piece of wood. Ndifreke was about to flee the scene when his elder sister returned from work and found Lovina in a pool of her own blood. Ndifreke had blood stains on his clothes and could not give a ready explanation for them. When the elder sister raised the alarm, Ndifreke was caught and handed over to officers of the Anthony Police Station. As at the time of his arrest, Ndifreke was said to have had on him about N6,500 worth of recharge cards. "He was heavily drunk. He told the police officers that he had bought the cards at Oshodi, but this was not plausible as it was known to all that Ndifreke was unemployed," the source said.
The apartment of the Michaels was deserted when CRIME DIGEST visited and no immediate family member could be reached for comments. The Lagos state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Samuel Jinadu, confirmed the incident. He said, "Ndifreke came home drunk and in the cause of a disagreement with his sister used a big chopstick to hit Lovina on the head. Lovina sustained a head injury and started bleeding. She was later rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where she eventually gave up the ghost. The case has been transferred to Panti for discreet investigation."
