The police in Ogun State have arrested a pastor, Mr. Tunde Gbenro, for allegedly dispossessing a church member, Mr. Kayode Omisope, of his landed property.
Also, a 15-year-old member of his church named Clara claimed Gbenro raped her on several occasions.
CRIME DIGEST gathered that Gbenro, who heads a popular church in Abeokuta known as the Salvation Praise Gospel Mission, had abused the trust the members of his congregation had in him, using it for personal gain.
In a petition written by Omisope, he claimed that he had asked Gbenro to assist him in the sale of an uncompleted building on a plot of land situated at Obada Oko, near Abeokuta.
The petition reads, "I gave Pastor Gbenro a photocopy of my landed property so that he could help me sell it for N2.5m. A few days later, he asked me to give him the original copy because prospective buyers were sceptical about the authenticity of the transaction. Being my pastor, I trusted him to be transparent. However, after a while, I did not hear from him and I decided to accost him."
Omisope added that he was desperate to get some money because he was having financial problems - the reason he put up the property for sale.
He said Gbenro had sold the property for N800,000 and had refused to give me the money till date.
Gbenro confirmed the allegation, but added that Omisope told him to sell the property for N600,000.
He said, "Mr. Omisope, who has been a member of my church for almost two years, initially said I should sell the property for N1m. But buyers complained that the price was too steep."
When asked how he sold it, he said he drafted a fake agreement document and issued a copy to the buyer, who is an air force employee.
Adegbenro told CRIME DIGEST that the money he received as payment for the property had been spent. He said, "I used the money to develop the church building."
A former church member who identified herself as Divine Igwe said Gbenro used to be a real pastor, but went astray. He added that a 15-year-old church member who was living with Gbenro and his family told her that Gbenro raped her on several occasions and had threatened to kill her if she spoke out.
Another former church member, who preferred not to be named, said Gbenro had made segxwal advances to her when she was seeking the fruit of the womb. She said, "If a woman is barren and she sleeps with an anointed man of God, the anointing will pursue the evil spirits, causing her to become pregnant."
While Gbenro has denied all the allegations except that of fraud, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the allegations against Gbenro to CRIME DIGEST through the telephone, said that the case was already in court.
