But for mother luck, three of the four men who went into a bush in Kusobosu-Kaiama in Kaiama Local Government of Kwara State, on May 7, 2011, to fell trees, would have been burnt to death. Even then, doctors are battling to save the lives of the men who were beaten to a state of coma, tied to stakes and set ablaze by villagers, who accused them of encroaching on their land.
The men, Francis Aaki, Monday Amodu and Abraham Agbo, are members of Timber Chain-Saw Mill Association that trade under Pa-Yaba Yaba Nigeria Ltd. While they were in the bush on that fateful day, they were allegedly accosted by people from the area, who accused them of encroaching on their land.
According to a statement signed by the president of their association, Alhaji Abdulwahab Aremu, and general-secretary, Mallam Babatunde Ajala-Magaji, obtained by CRIME DIGEST on Thursday, the men were allegedly accosted by people from the area who accused them of encroaching on their land. The people allegedly tied them to stakes and set them ablaze.
The statement said, “On May 7, 2011, four of our men had gone to the bush on the Kosubosu-Kaiama Road to get timbers. In the course of carrying out this task by the three of the men – that is felling of trees – they were accosted by people from the area led by Agba, who claimed that the sawyers encroached on their territory. Within a twinkle of an eye, they descended on them and beat them to a state of coma. Not done, they tied them to stakes and set their bodies ablaze.
“However, the fourth man, who had gone to the stream to get water on his return, witnessed the incident and took to his heels. He was pursued by the assailants but was not caught.
“He ran to Ganda, a nearby village and a rescue team followed him to the scene of the incident, where the victims were untied and taken to a nearby clinic. The case was reported to a police station in the area and arrests were made. But to our surprise and chagrin, those arrested were granted bail after they were interrogated by the police in Gwaria and Kaiama respectively. But when the cat was to be let out of the bag, the case was transferred to the police headquarters in Ilorin.”
The group urged the state government, the police and other relevant authorities to ensure that justice was done. They added that the victims suffered different degrees of burns and may likely have permanent deformities. They raised the alarm that one of the victims was on the verge of death.
They, therefore, urged the state government to take up the matter to prevent a future occurrence and guarantee their safety while they were carrying out their duties.
But the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Dabo Ezekiel, in a telephone interview with CRIME DIGEST on Thursday, said he was not aware of the matter
