It was on Wednesday last week (18/05/2011) at around 2:00 in the afternoon in Kwale Delta State that I was with my friend in his house due to a little strike we had and we started hearing gun shots. I told my friend that it was gun and he said it sounds like knockout. But the sound continued and after an hour, we decided to go and get some cash from the ATM in Zenith but we met crowd talking about robbers that just left. We proceeded to Unity Bank and Oceanic and we met the same scene. It was then I began to make inquiry and found out that the robbers came with a Jeep and a Toyota Camry.
They shot sporadically for more than an hour without any challenge despite the number of Police and Soldiers /Mopol guarding various companies in the town. The gang which contains about 2 ladies divided themselves into groups and took the three banks by storm and carted away with about 84.6 million Naira. On the process their jeep got spoilt and they spent some time to put it in order.
During this period, one of them holding a gun on his right hand was using his teeth with his left hand to tear some wrap of the money and spraying it. He was using the Ukwani Language to tell people to wait until they have gone before picking the money as he does not want to kill any body but they refused. The camry that was at Zenith Bank landed and two of the robbers came out and shot some bullets at those picking the money, many injured and were taking to the hospital. One shot on the belly died 2 day later.
One of the ladies shot a young girl who just finished her NYSC two years ago and is now a teacher after collecting about 200k from her and wanted to fire another boy after collecting 30k from him but a mail among the intervened. He was angry with the lady for shooting the young girl. The girl died on the spot. They also killed 3 other person then the treasurer of the LGA who had high blood pressure saw his BP rise fast and died in the hospital some minutes later.
After the robbery, the robbers drove through a farm path that leads to a village called Amai. The youths of Amai were given a tip off and they succeeded in hitting one and when the other robbers saw that he will not survive and might mention their names shot him on the head and fled. The youths also recovered about 4 million naira for the banks.
It was a terrible experience because such kind of robbery has not happened in this town before.
