President Goodluck Jonathan says he will not subscribe to calls to scrap the National Youth Service Corps scheme, established in 1973 to foster national unity.
The President spoke in Lagos at an interactive session with the youths to flag off activities for the inauguration as President on May 29
Jonathan said there were plans to reform the scheme to achieve the goals for which it was established.
“The NYSC is a programme that is helpful to the Nigerian youth. It encourages integration and create environment for a youth to move out of his domain to learn other cultures.
“I am a beneficiary of the scheme because many of my friends today, I met them during my service year.
“I will therefore not subscribe to the call that I should scrap the NYSC. We already have plans to make the scheme to be more functional, practical and profitable,” Jonathan said.
There have been calls for the scrapping of the scheme, following the death of some corps members in some parts of the North during the post election violence. The President also said that in the next six months, he would present bills for the amendment of the Constitution.
He called on relevant stakeholders including the youth, to submit memorandum that will be useful in drafting the executive bills.
Earlier, the President of the Nigeria Youth Council, Mr Olawale Ajani, had identified corruption, power and job creation as the critical areas the President should look into as his new administration takes off on May 29.

Is better for every students to stay in their geopolitical zones and serve, inter-geopolitical zones should be out of it. The northerners can not be enjoying here while their own senseless people will be killing our hope of tomorrow.

I don't subscribe to the idea of everyone serving in his geopolitical zone because we still have these two main religions in each zone. The NYSC should be scraped because it's main aim have been defeated. No one will be happy to loose his or her child as any stage in life not to talk the one you have laboured so much for, only to reap the fruit and he or she was killed.

What a pitty, one man success is another man sorrow, I think our people should be serve in our country and their people should serve in thier own country too bcos these killing is too much for us to bear, am sure dat if they have killed one of our Leader Children they would have stop these NYCS serving or no serving. Yoruba proverb says, we see the beggning of war but we don't know the end of the war. Peolple dat involve in the incident can tell, i pray to God dat they will not involve in any disaster again Amen.

I Dont support the idea of scrap the NYSC Programme and everybody to stay in their geopolitical zone and serve. there is a lot of advantages in changing environment. but let him do something about this stupid Mallam in North if possible stop posting people to North. i pity all those family that lost their loved ones during the election after years of suffering in school at the end all in vain.

i really supported the president for not accepting the idea of scrapping the NYSC, NYSC has being a nice forum for youths leaving the university which i was also one of them during ma time what its really needed is a total reform n considerations ,eg not sending the youths serving to war zones ,natural or human disaster like what happend during the recient election period,i like the speach of the chairman of the NYSC also

I see! it is those that are affected can really feel the pains of loosing someone you've laboured for, for years. I feel their pains too deeply from heart. Therefore I'm fully in support of scrapping this so called NYSC.
