Investigation revealed that the incident was noticed by villagers at about 7am when fuel was gushing out from the pipelines, which was suspected to have been damaged by vandals
Resisdents who came to the scene of the incident told the Daily Sun that throughout the night there was offensive odour emanating from the pipeline and later enveloped the entire community, adding that they immediately organised all night prayer against fire incident.
“When we remembered the Jesse petrol fire incident that consumed hundreds of souls sometimes in 1998, we summoned courage and attempted to prevent the impending danger,” said one of the villagers whose name was given as Oghenero.
Continuing, Oghenero said at about 7am, they saw a very dangerous and wild fire emanating from the spot where the pipeline was damaged. He explained that the raging fire later spread along the river, which caused many of the residents to abandon their homes and ran for safety.
Daily Sun was further told that two men who attempted to rescue their relatives were trapped in the inferno.
Gripped with fear, the villagers had deserted the area and were taking refuge in neigbhouring towns and villages.
Meanwhile, fire fighters from the Delta State Fire Service had been drafted to the area to put out the fire.
