THE National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said yesterday that its intensification of the war against fake and unwholesome drugs and foods in the country had led to the arrest of two Camerounians posing as doctors in Kaduna State.
NAFDAC officials alleged that the culprits were dispensing unregistered Chinese drugs to Nigerians in Pambegua, a rural community in the state.
While parading the two foreigners, NAFDAC Director-General, Paul Orhii and Deputy Director, in charge of Kaduna office, Ahemen Innocent told the media that 40-year-old Kwekam Allen Blaise and Yahaya Jida, 30, were arrested by the agency's officials at their Central Medical Traditional Chiny Clinic in Pambegua, following a tip-off by some members of the public.
Innocent said that it was inconceivable that one of the suspects, Jida, who was once arrested for a similar offence in Jalingo, Taraba State sometime ago could still be found in the illegal business.
His words: "We got a tip-off on Wednesday that there were some people dealing in unregistered Chinese drugs and selling it to the people. In fact, when we got to the place, we discovered one ramshackle building and when we entered we discovered that they were actually dispensing drugs there.
"When we asked one of them, he claimed to be a doctor. When we asked him for his credentials, he had nothing to tender and we eventually discovered that the men running the fake clinic are Camerounians.  We got him arrested and brought him to Kaduna."
Innocent added: "We learnt that later in the night his accomplice showed up at the police station and he was also arrested. They both claimed to be doctors. They were issuing cards to patients. In fact, when we got to their clinic we found the whole placed crowded with patients.
"During interrogation, one of them, Yahaya confessed to us that he was once arrested in Jalingo and detained in Lagos. But I don't know why he has refused to stop this illegal business since he was released."
