A suspected cult member, Thankgod Agina, is currently cooling off at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Nigeria Police, Ogun State Command, Eleweeran, Abeokuta. Agina and his alleged accomplice were intercepted by a Stop and Search team while they were on a motorcycle.

When the police demanded the bag Agina’s friend was carrying, he surrendered it, but fled into the bush. A police source told CRIME DIGEST that Agina also tried to flee, but was not as lucky as his friend.

“Our men intercepted both of them on a motorcycle,” the policeman said. “One of them was carrying a bag so the police demanded to search the bag. As he gave the bag to the police, he fled into the bush. Agina also tried to escape, but the motorcyclist that was conveying them grabbed him as he was about to do so – probably in order not to be implicated. Our men picked them up and brought them here.”

Agina told CRIME DIGEST that the version of the police was not true, as he did not know the other person that was on the motorcycle with him. “I was at the bus stop at Ogoji waiting for a bus when one came through. I entered the bus, but people at the bus stop pleaded with me to allow an elderly man that had been standing there take my slot. I obliged. When I did not get another bus on time, I opted for a motorcycle. I asked the motorcyclist how much would take to get me to my destination and he said N200. I negotiated the price to N150 and he agreed. In the process, another guy came and said he was heading towards my direction and the motorcyclist said we should both bring N500, but I negotiated it to N300 for both of us, which he agreed. Shortly after we began the journey, we were stopped by the police and they asked the guy to bring his bag. He gave them and ran into the bush. When they searched, it they saw a gun, some bullets, a laptop and an ID card. I don’t know the guy and I have never seen him before,” he said.

He told CRIME DIGEST that he was coming from his sister’s house, where he attended a naming ceremony. “My sister had a naming ceremony and I went to celebrate with her. It was when I was coming all this happened,” he said.

He however confided in CRIME DIGEST that he belonged to a cult, White Hanky, which concentrates on avenging the perceived offences committed against their members and friends.

He said, “I belong to a cult, White Hanky; we do not steal. All we do is avenge our members or friends. For instance, if we see you with the girl friend of our friend or member, we warn you to desist from walking or talking with her. If you refuse, we would beat you up. I joined about a year ago when I was involved with a member’s girlfriend. They beat me and one of them asked me to join or they were going to do something terrible to me. I joined out of fear. I never thought of reporting the case to the police.”

A police source however told CRIME DIGEST that Agina was lying because he was the one that negotiated the fare for both passengers. He said that the police had contacted the owner of the laptop, and he told them that he was robbed.

He said, “The guy is lying. How can he say he does not know the other guy when he was the one that negotiated the fare on behalf of both of them? Besides, we have got in touch with the owner of the laptop and he told us that he was robbed inside a luxury bus on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The thieves disguised as passengers and they robbed all of them aboard the bus.”

When he insisted that he was innocent, CRIME DIGEST asked Agina for the telephone number of his sister, whose child’s naming ceremony he attended, which he gave. On dialling the number, the service provider responded that the said number did not exist.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, stating that it was under investigation. “Once we conclude investigations, we would charge him to court on the directive of the Commissioner of Police,” he said.
