Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the accident occurred at a bus stop called Naira and Kobo along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway on Friday.
The lorry marked XS 515 MUS was said to be transporting bags of cement from Ewekoro in Ogun State to Ilesa in Osun State before the accident occurred.The driver of the lorry was said to have run over the motorcyclists by the roadside while he was trying to avoid a head-on collision with another lorry which was attempting to make a U-turn at the junction.
He was said to have fled the scene immediately the accident occurred.While three of the victims were said to have died on the spot, the fourth cyclists reportedly died on Saturday morning at a hospital where he was rushed to shortly after the accident.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area, Mr. Kolawole Adepegba, a Chief Superintendent of Police, was said to have led his men to the scene to retrieve the corpses and put the situation under control as irate indigenes of the town attempted to set the abandoned lorry ablaze with its content.
Three of the victims were identified as Kehinde Alidu (26), Joshua Ayodele (25) and Tunde Lawon (31) while the identity of the fourth is yet to be confirmed.Their corpses were said to have been deposited at the morgue of a catholic hospital in Apomu.
