Former IMF boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn was on Friday, July 1st, 2011 sensationally handed his freedom as the case against his alleged rape of a hotel maid was on the brink of collapse.

Bloomberg reported that prosecutors have 'agreed to release him on his own recognizance'.

The New York hotel maid who accused Strauss-Kahn of molesting her in his $3,000-a-night suite lied to investigators, law enforcement sources claim.

Despite a wealth of forensic evidence against the 62-year-old, prosecutors have dismissed a lot of what the maid said about the alleged encounter.

Prosecutors are now said to be working to combat three possible scenarios that could each destroy their case against the banker.

They are: that he had consensual sex with the maid; that he paid her for the encounter; or that she set him up in an extortion plot.

There are also issues involving the asylum application of the Guinean maid as well as her possible links to the criminal world.

She is said to have personal connections to drug dealers and money launderers.

'She's a con artist,' said one source, who added she could not be put on the stand because 'she'd be a flawed witness'.
