elvin Kudaba, a 30-year-old student, would have stayed back at home on the night of June 27 if he had known that members of Operation Famou Tangbei were lurking around his neighbourhood at Punch Road, Off Imgbi Road, Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State. But the young man, who is a student of the state’s chapter of the National Open University of Nigeria, could not endure mosquito bites that night. So, he dashed out to the nearby supermarket to buy insecticide at about 9.30 pm.

Before the soft-spoken Kudaba could reach the supermarket, his body was almost disfigured. He was rounded up by the notorious special police squad, kicked and hit all over with boots and gun butts and thoroughly horsewhipped. His body was lacerated and his shirt was soaked with blood that came from his torn skin. He was made to roll on the muddy ground with a loaded gun pointed at him. After that, he was hijacked and thrown into an unmarked Hilux patrol vehicle and driven away.
