Domestic air travellers in the country will from Monday pay additional fees as Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited has increased its Passenger Service Charge.
BASL, the firm managing the Murtala Muhammed Airport Two, Lagos, on Thursday, announced a 150 per cent increase of its PSC, from N1,000 to N2,500, on every flight ticket purchased at its facility.
The development is coming barely one week after the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria increased its PSC from N350 to N1,000 across all 22 airports in Nigeria under its management.
"On Monday July 11, 2011, BASL will increase its PSC from N1,000 to N2,500 per passenger ticket," said the Chief Operations Officer of the firm, Mr. Femi Kolawole.
The firm explained that the fee would be utilised to maintain the terminal, noting that since it began operations in 2007, the annual cost of running the terminal had been increasing phenomenally.
Consequently, the President Airlines Operators of Nigeria, Dr. Steve Mahonwu, said there would be a slight adjustment and that the increase would be marginal.
"Yes, we are aware of FAAN and Bi-Courtney increase of PSC but the price difference on the ticket may not be much,"Mahonwu told our correspondent on the telephone on Friday.
Kolawole said that BASL had since December 22, 2006, obtained approval from the various authorities to charge $15 and N350, a total of about N3,000.
He explained that the firm had held meetings with airlines and other stakeholders to sensitise them of this development while it continued to provide consistent services within Nigerian airports.
The Punch had exclusively reported last Thursday of plans made by the firm to increase its PSC.
Meanwhile, passengers contacted by our correspondent expressed displeasure at the development as they noted that the cost of travelling by air in Nigeria was becoming elitist.
"With the continuous increase in airfares, it will be difficult for even the average Nigerian to travel by air," a traveller at MMA2 who simply addressed herself as Stella, said.
Though experts in the aviation sector decried the increase, they noted that BASL followed the path of FAAN.
They, however, called on the airport operators to deliver quality services to travellers.
