The man, who declined to reveal his identity, said he bought the four bedroom flat for N3m two weeks ago. His house was among the several homes demolished in the exercise recently embarked upon by Edo State government, in order to bring a lasting solution to the perennial problem of erosion in Benin City.
The demolition exercise, which began yesterday, started on the Upper Lawani axis of the Benin moat where a storey building and other houses allegedly built on the moat were pulled down.
Some of the residents whose buildings were marked for demolition were seen packing out of the houses yesterday. Chairman of the Task Force, Lawrence Loye disclosed that the state government plans to use the moat as water drainage and tourist attraction.
“Benin City moat is a complete circle and there are other feeder moats. We want to recover them. The moat was built hundreds of years back. It was supposed to be a natural heritage site,” he said.
According to Mr Loye, the people have failed to follow the law.
