A STARVING, emaciated dog, abandoned two months ago in an apartment in New Bedford, Massachusetts, jumped out of a third-storey window in a desperate search for food, myFOXboston.com reports.
New Bedford police and the Animal Rescue League of Boston are investigating persons of interest who left two pit bull-type dogs in the vacant apartment two months ago, without food or water.
One of the dogs, a starving and emaciated one-year-old female, jumped from the third-storey window pm Friday, searching for food. She broke her hip and hind leg when she hit the ground, according to the local animal welfare agency.
Animal control officers also found a weak, malnourished four-month-old puppy inside the filthy, flea-infested apartment. The property manager said the tenant left the residence two months ago.
Surgeons successfully repaired the one-year-old female's broken hip and hind leg, but she will require ongoing monitoring in addition to a special feeding program to address the effects of malnutrition. The puppy is recovering well.
"This constitutes felony cruelty against an innocent animal," said Lt Alan Borgal, director of the Center for Animal Protection at the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
"We are counting on the public to step forward with information to help bring the person or persons responsible to justice."
