By PETER OKUTU ABAKALIKI—Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, Thursday, suspended five lecturers for their alleged role in segxwally abusing students and extortion through illegal sale of handouts.
The Provost of the College, Prof. Silas Omebe, who made this known to newsmen, said that the actions of the affected lecturers were contrary to the principles and policies of the institution.
He said the offences of the five lecturers ranged from segxwal harassment, intimidation, extortion and unwholesome attitude, which had become synonymous with them.
The Provost said three of the lecturers, who were in Business Education department, Political Science Department and Social Science Department were suspended indefinitely without salary for allegedly selling handouts at unapproved prices and extortion of students.
He noted that the money extorted from the students by the lecturers were collected under the guise of assisting them to pass during their examinations. He said the lecturers also perpetrated other unwholesome acts, that were not in the interest of students and the institution.
The others two lecturers who were suspended with their salaries stopped were of the Social Studies Department.
Omebe said: “There are lecturers, who do not teach the students but all they do is to set traps for them in order to extort money from them.”
The Provost commended the Ebonyi State Government for approving a new pay package for workers of the institution adding that the development would facilitate the accreditation of some courses in the institution.
