Muna (Saudi Arabia) Nigerian Muslim pilgrims joined others from across the world to perform the devil stoning ritual, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The pilgrims armed with stones and pebbles, stoned pillars representing the devil at Jamrat about 10 kilometres away from Muna, in a symbolic rejection of temptation on the second day of the annual Hajj.
The stoning exercise, which will last for three days, with the pilgrims shouting “Allah Akbar’’ Allah is great, at the point of throwing, is to show the rejection of the devil.
At the end of each stoning, pilgrims are supposed to step aside and supplicate to Allah to prevent them from the temptation of the devil.
NAN reports that each of the pilgrims is expected to throw 49 stones for the three days exercise with seven on the first day, 21 each on both second and third day before the final movement to Makkah where they are expected to perform another tawaf (circumambulation).
More than 2.5 million pilgrims from around the globe, including 99,000 Nigerian Pilgrims, prayed for peace and security on the sprawling plains of Arafat on Saturday, Muzdalifa and Muna on Sunday and Monday respectively.
NAN reports that over three million sheep from Sudan and Somalia that arrived Jeddah Islamic Port (JIP) were slaughtered by the pilgrims as part of the Hajj rites. (NAN)
