In a bid to check traffic congestion and inculcate a sense of responsibility on motorists, especially those in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed has said that vehicles parked within the City, must pay a minimum of N50 for parking anywhere in the city.

The minister said this over the weekend at the test-run of controlled parking space in the Federal Capital City (FCC).

Mohammed, who was represented by the Director in the FCT Transport Department, Wilson Unogwu said the scheme will take-off next week and all the 5000-marked-parking-bay on the streets of the city will charged a minimum of N50 per hour and N650 for a full day while defaulters are to pay N5000 for wrong parking on flowerbeds and walkways.

He said, “The project will be executed by two private companies: Integrated Parking System and Platinum Parking Management Service to whom the monetized parking space have been concession.

Chief Operating Officer of IRS Umar Kaltungu said the system was fully automated and charges range from N50 for 30 minutes will provide the administration with the revenue to manage the infrastructure it has created.

He said an electronic swipe card preloaded with N500 will be purchased by drivers to enable them make payment at Point of Sale PoS terminals, adding that the cards can be recharged from the banks.
Similarly, the Abuja Markets Management Limited (AMML) has said that it intends to increase tolls for all categories of vehicles entering Wuse market.

Cars, which hitherto paid N50 are now to pay N100, Pickup/Bus which formerly paid N100 will be charged N200, Dyna/Canter N400, Lorry N600, while a Trailer will be charged N1000.

The market managers said that the increment which will take effect by Monday, December 12, 2011, was to enable them meet up with the emerging challenges of service provision, infrastructure maintenance and renewal in the market
