An Upper Area Court in Jos has sentenced a 20-year-old pupil, Adamu Yakubu, to two years imprisonment for breaking the windscreen of a car belonging to an actress, Jemila Nagudu, News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Jemila Nagudu

Yakubu, of Government College, Jos, Plateau State, was convicted for smashing the windscreen of the car belonging to a Hausa film actress without any provocation contrary to Section 361 of the Penal Code.

The court, however, gave the convict an option of N3,000 fine. The Judge, Mallam Mustapha Hassan, in his judgment, said the prosecution had convinced the court beyond doubt that the convict committed the offence.

Hassan said the evidence tendered before the court and the confessional statement of the convict had assisted the court in reaching its decision.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Gokwat Ibrahim, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on December 17, at Ali Kazaure Area of Jos.

He said, “My lord, the accused, on the day, at about 12pm, ordered the actress to leave the area where he resides or face the consequences.

“When the actress, who was on a visit to her in-laws refused to leave the area, the accused smashed the windscreen of her CRV jeep with a stone.”

The prosecutor said the unidentified fiance of the actress reported the matter to Laranto Police Station, which resulted in the arrest of the suspect.

When the case came up for hearing, Yakubu pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

The Judge said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.

Meanwhile, an Abuja Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday remanded a 30-year-old man, Kabiru Abu, in prison custody over an alleged theft of a mini jeep belonging to Saidu Kurara.

The accused, a resident of No. 35, Flat 2, Police Officers Quarters, Ikeja, Lagos, was also brought before the court on allegations of impersonation, forgery and giving false information.

Police prosecutor Abiola Oyewusi told the court that on April 9, the accused allegedly stole a Zotte Nomad mini jeep with number plate EW 617 LND from Babangida Abdullahi at Gimbia Street, Garki, Abuja.

Oyewusi said the jeep, valued at N550,000, was a property of Kurara, Abdullahi’s boss.

He told the court that after the theft, the accused went to Zuba Police Station in Abuja and gave false information to the police that he had lost the particulars of the jeep.

Oyewusi said the accused obtained a police extract report, thereby, impersonating Kurara, the owner of the jeep.

The prosecutor said that the accused subsequently sold the jeep to Oladotun Dickson; an offence, which was said to contravene sections 287, 179, 364 and 178 of the Penal Code.

However, when the charge was read to the accused person, he pleaded not guilty.

Chief Magistrate Ahmed Shuaibu ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody and adjourned further hearing till February 6, 2012.
